The International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA)—founded by Sigmund Freud and his colleagues—is the global benchmark for psychoanalytic training. One of the defining features of IPA-accredited training is that it is grounded in the analyst’s own personal psychoanalysis, which continues throughout the training process. This ensures that the education is not only rigorous and in-depth, but also rooted in an honest and sustained engagement with the unconscious. It’s important to know that the title psychoanalyst is not legally protected, and there are individuals who adopt the title without undergoing this intensive, standardized training. Such individuals operate outside the recognized psychoanalytic community, and the quality of their preparation is often unclear. The IPA was established precisely to address this issue—what Freud called “wild analysis”—and to safeguard the integrity and depth of psychoanalytic work. Psychoanalysts who are members of the IPA state IPA following their name.
The recognized psychoanalytical training in Sweden is with the Swedish Psychoanalytical Society (SPAF).
